Resolving a disappearing network interface with dual-boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu

Having installed the network interface drivers for a Gigabyte GC-WB1733D-I PCI-e card in Windows 10, Ubuntu could no longer find the network interface. The two operating systems were ran in a dual-boot configuration. The root cause of the issue was the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) module that was installed with the drivers and that Linux loaded.

To check whether your Ubuntu OS picks it up, run

and one of the entries should list wmi on its own:

To disable it, edit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and add an entry

Restart the OS for changes to take effect.
